The legal battle surrounding Karmelo Anthony is far from over.

Just weeks after being convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison, Anthony has assembled a new legal team to challenge the verdict and begin the appeals process. According to reports, the group includes several high-profile attorneys with extensive experience in civil rights and appellate law.

Among those joining the effort are Texas NAACP President Gary Bledsoe, veteran appellate attorney Russell Wilson II, and civil rights lawyer Brooke Cluse. The attorneys announced they will conduct an independent review of the trial record while exploring every available avenue to appeal Anthony’s conviction.

The move marks a significant shift in Anthony’s defense strategy. His previous trial attorney is no longer representing him, and the family has been publicly discussing plans to pursue an appeal since the guilty verdict was handed down earlier this month.

Anthony was convicted in the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf following an altercation at a Texas high school track meet. The case quickly became one of the most closely watched criminal trials in the country, generating national headlines and intense debate across social media, political circles, and civil rights organizations.

Court records show Anthony filed a notice of appeal shortly after sentencing, signaling that his legal fight would continue beyond the trial court.

His new legal team says its focus will be on reviewing the trial proceedings and identifying potential legal errors that could support an appeal. While appeals do not retry the facts of a case, appellate courts can review whether mistakes were made during the original trial that may have affected the outcome.

Whether the new team can successfully overturn the conviction remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the case is entering a new chapter, and the legal battle is far from finished.
